He was raised in the Fowler/Vienna area, and graduated from Fowler High School in 1942 while also working on the family farm. As World War ll escalated, Charles made the decision at the age of 18 to enlist in the US Army. After his discharge from the service, Charles attended Youngstown State University and later met his wife Doris (Martin). They were married March 6, 1948 and started a family while living in Leavittsburg, OH. They soon moved to Vienna where they lived for more than 45 years. Charles worked for International Mill Service for over 30 years before retiring in 1981. He began his career as a crane operator and worked his way through several levels of supervisory and managerial responsibility, ultimately becoming the Regional Manager for job-sites across the northern United States and Canada. After retirement he was very active in the VFW, serving as Commander for the Bailey Barto Post 7614 in Johnston, OH. He was a 3rd degree Mason and recently received his 60 year pin as a member of the Copper Penny Lodge, F&AM. He was an avid gardener and looked forward to planting and harvesting many varieties of peppers and tomatoes each year.

Charles will be dearly missed by his brother Norman (Marjorie) Hayes of Ovieda, FL, and his children Peggy (Robert) Mercer, Kathy (Rex) Rager, and Charles (Cathy) Hayes Jr. He will also be missed by eight grandchildren, Shelly Peebles, Rob (Mandi) Mercer, Emily (Ryan) Petrick, Bucky (Anna) Rager, Rex (Mollie) Rager, Amanda Hayes, Becca Hayes, and Megan Hayes.
