Obituary

Edward (Whitey) M. Borkowski, age 94, of Warren and formerly of Erie, PA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 4, 2025 at Washington Square Healthcare Center in Warren under the comforting care of hospice. Affectionately known as Whitey, he was born on November 15, 1930 in Erie, Pennsylvania the son of the late Marion (aka, Mike, the Kieska King) and Irene Sarbak Borkowski. Whitey attended Holy Trinity grade school and graduated from Academy High, where he excelled in several sports including track, baseball (1946 City Champion – Jr. Baseball League) and football. After graduating in 1948 and receiving a scholarship, Whitey played football in Gannon's first Golden Knight football team coached by former Mayor Louis Tullio in 1949. In 1950, he enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country abroad during the Korean War with the 11th Airborne division as a paratrooper and with the 187th Infantry regimental combat team. Following his honorable discharge in 1953, Whitey worked at Penelec as a journeyman lineman/emergency trouble-shooter; after retiring he enjoyed golfing and traveling. He is survived by daughters, Sandra Zauhar and husband Joseph of OH, Sharon Milovich and husband Stephen of PA and Annette Rogers and husband Tom of ID; eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Whitey was preceded in death by his wife, Janet Pettinato Borkowski; son Steven Borkowski, as well as sisters Florence Nowak, Ann Chrzczon and Teresa Englert; and brothers Julian and Thomas Borkowski. A Requiem Mass with Fr. Joshua Houck, FSSP officiating, will be offered on Friday, February 14, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at Queen of the Holy Rosary Church. A Private Burial for family and close friends, with full military honors, will take place at Mary Queen of Peace Cemetery, Erie, PA. Memorials may be made to Queen of the Holy Rosary Church, 291 Scoville Drive, Vienna, Ohio 44473.
