It is with sadness and appreciation for a life well lived that we say goodbye to John R. Gilliland. John passed away at Shepherd of the Valley in Howland, Ohio on May 5, 2024.

John was born in Grove City, Pennsylvania on January 25, 1935.

He graduated from Fredonia High School in Fredonia, Pennsylvania, class of 1953. He joined the United States Army for 3 years after high school followed by a 17-year career in the Air Force where he specialized in military intelligence, serving our country with pride, until his retirement in 1976. He received the Bronze Star for distinguished service during his time in Vietnam.

He was married to his wife Gloria on January 25, 1980.

John enjoyed doing puzzles and was an avid Cleveland Sports fan. He was especially a fan of basketball, of which he himself was quite good in his youth having been a member of the 1951 Pennsylvania State Class C Championship team.

John leaves behind many who loved him dearly. His children; Rick Gilliland (Kathy) of Austin TX, Lynda Armstrong (Joe) of Niles, OH, Patrick Gilliland (Kelly) of Sebastopol, CA, Ken Gilliland (Michelle) of Woodbridge, VA, and Norman Lee Hightree, Jr. of Hainesville, IL. His grandchildren; Ryan (Heather), Erin (Matt), Kayla (Justin), Mary Jane (Joey), Jacob and 2 great-grandchildren; Grayson and Scarlett.

John was predeceased by his first wife Mary Jane Kubyako Gilliland; mother Mildred Louise Zahniser and sisters; Pearl Buchannon, Marian Thome, Peggy Keck, Nancy Kidd and Harriet Moyer.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to Shepherd of the Valley of Howland and Hospice of the Valley for the wonderful care given to John.

In keeping with his wishes, a caring cremation will take place followed by a private family entombment in Crown Hill Burial Park in Vienna.
