Girard - Shirley Thorpe, 87, formerly of Girard entered into her eternal life peacefully with her family by her side on June 26, 2012 at the Hospice House in Poland.
Shirley was born on February 19, 1925 in Youngstown, the daughter of the late Norman and Dorothy Giering.
She worked at Truscon Steel as a welder of tank treads during World War II. After the war Shirley worked at Mermosh Garage Doors until she was married and became a homemaker. Shirley was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. Her dedication to her family was endless.
Shirley was a member of Pleasant Valley Church for many years and most recently a member of the Liberty Assembly of God. She was an active member of her parish, participating in both the Choir and Bell Choir and volunteering in numerous church programs.
Shirley loved to travel with her husband, she also enjoyed singing and dancing and just mention cards and she was at the table ready to play. But most of all she enjoyed all the time she spent with her friends and family.
Shirley leaves to cherish her memory her husband Burt of 54 years whom she married November 2, 1957. Also her two sons, Barry (Nancy) McMahan of Youngstown, Robert (Cindy) McMahan of Seattle, WA., a daughter Sherry (Don) Grant of Indiana, two step-sons Richard (Janice) Thorpe of Cleveland, Jeff Thorpe of Girard, two brothers, Vincent Giering of North Lima and William Giering of Florida, nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by an infant son, Ralph Jr., a brother Robert Giering, Granddaughter Tina Woods and a Grandson, Stanley Herubin.
Family and friends may call from 5:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, June 29, 2012 at Freedom Place Church formerly known as the Liberty Assembly of God Church on Belmont Avenue.
The funeral service will be at 11:00 AM Saturday at the church with calling hours one hour prior to the service. Shirley will be laid to rest at the Crown Hill Burial Park in Vienna.
In lieu of flowers the family is requesting that donations be made in Shirley's name, to Hospice House, 9803 Sharrot Rd. Poland, OH 44514,
The family would like to thank the staff at the Hospice House for the loving care and support to Shirley and her family during her stay.
